St. Thomas College, Kozhenchery, accredited by NAAC with B++ grade was established in 1953 by the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church for producing socially committed, intellectually well trained and inspired young men and women. The College caters to the students mainly hailing from the remote regions of the eastern parts of Pathanamthitta district. The college conducts thirteen under graduate, eight post graduate courses and one self- financing course. Four departments are approved research centers of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.

The department of Zoology had its inception in 1957 with B. Sc. Zoology Main Degree course. It was upgraded to a postgraduate department in 1968 and in 1989 got approved as a research department by the Mahatma Gandhi University. The Department successfully completed 53 years and celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2007. The department is engaged in creative and productive activities in higher education scenario, imparting learning in rural background and promoting students to find novel and sustainable means of livelihood.
The department offers B.Sc (Zoology), M.Sc (Zoology), M.Phil and Ph.D programmes. Faculty is nurtured presently by eight permanent teaching staff and three non teaching staff. Sanctioned strength is 32 seats for B.Sc and 8 seats for M.Sc.
